HUTCHINS RICEBIRD REPORT

October 16, 2026

Trunk or Treat

🎃 Trunk or Treat is Almost Here!
Get ready for a spooktacular time at Hutchins Elementary! Our annual Trunk or Treat is coming up on October 29th, and we cannot wait to celebrate with our Ricebird families!
We are still collecting candy donations, and our House Competition is in full swing! Students can bring candy donations to help their House earn points and work toward the top spot. Please help support Trunk or Treat with candy donations. Every bag makes a difference, so let’s see which House can bring in the most candy!
Thank you for helping us make this a fun and memorable event for our students. Let’s show our Ricebird PRIDE and make this year’s Trunk or Treat one to remember!
A Halloween flyer reads Hutchins Trunk or Treat on October 29 from 5:00-6:30 PM at Hutchins Elementary School, featuring glowing jack-o'-lanterns against a purple night sky.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week Begins October 26th!

Hutchins Elementary will celebrate Red Ribbon Week beginning October 26th! Red Ribbon Week is a time to encourage students to make healthy choices, stay drug-free, and build habits that help them have bright and successful futures.
Throughout the week, we will remind our Ricebirds that their choices matter and that taking care of their minds and bodies is an important part of growing up strong and healthy.
We encourage all students to participate in our Red Ribbon Week activities and dress-up days! Let’s show our Ricebird PRIDE by making healthy choices, supporting one another, and standing together for a drug-free future. We can’t wait to see everyone participate!

Unity Day

Unity Day is October 21st!
Hutchins Elementary will celebrate Unity Day on October 21st! Unity Day is a special opportunity to stand together against bullying and promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. It reminds us that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and welcomed at school.
We encourage all students to wear orange on October 21st to show their support for a school where everyone belongs. Wearing orange is a simple way to send a powerful message that we stand together and celebrate what makes each of us unique.
Let’s show our Ricebird PRIDE by choosing kindness, including others, and making Hutchins a place where every student feels like they belong. Together, we can make a difference, one kind act at a time!

BRAINS IN ACTION

Brains in Action: Pause Before You Answer
This week, encourage your child to take a moment to think before responding to a question or solving a problem. Instead of rushing to give an answer, remind them to slow down, consider their options, and think through their reasoning.
Why it matters
Giving the brain time to process information helps children improve attention, decision-making, and problem-solving. Learning to pause before responding also helps students avoid careless mistakes and develop the habit of thinking carefully before taking action.
Tip
Make a game out of thoughtful thinking at home. When asking your child a question, encourage them to take a few seconds to think before answering. Celebrate careful reasoning, even when they don't immediately get the answer right. Teaching children that it's okay to slow down and think helps build confident, independent learners.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT TIP OF THE WEEK

Parent Engagement Tip: Get Involved in Your Child's Classroom
This week, consider reaching out to your child's teacher to learn about ways you can support classroom activities and learning throughout the school year. Whether it's volunteering, helping prepare materials, participating in classroom celebrations, or supporting special projects, there are many ways families can contribute to the success of our school.
Why it matters
Family involvement helps strengthen the partnership between home and school. When parents and teachers work together, students see that their education is a shared priority. Family participation also helps build a stronger school community where everyone has a role in supporting student success.
Tip
Send your child's teacher a quick message asking if there are any upcoming classroom activities or campus events where parent involvement would be helpful. Even small contributions can make a meaningful difference at Hutchins Elementary!

CAPTURING KIDS HEARTS TIP OF THE WEEK

CKH Tip: Choose Your Response
This week, encourage your child to think about how they respond when something doesn't go their way. Whether they lose a game, struggle with an assignment, or disagree with a friend, remind them that while they cannot always control what happens, they can control how they respond.
Why it matters
Capturing Kids' Hearts emphasizes personal responsibility and making positive choices. Helping children recognize the connection between their choices and their outcomes builds self-awareness, emotional regulation, and stronger relationships. Learning to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively helps children navigate challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Tip
When your child faces a frustrating situation, ask, "What could you do differently next time?" or "What is a positive way you could handle this?" Help them brainstorm possible responses and choose one they can practice. These conversations build the skills children need to make responsible decisions and take ownership of their actions.
